9 Things That'll Happen When We Run out of Oil

A Glimpse into a Post-Peak Oil World

By Keith Kohl
Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Once again, oil prices have proved they will not drop quietly into the winter. This afternoon, I quickly glanced at the television to check up on oil prices. After all, yesterday they were hovering around $85 a barrel. For a minute, I thought this was a sign that prices would finally start heading lower. I was wrong.

During trading today, oil jumped to a high of $90.60 per barrel!

So in honor of oil prices reaching another record today, I'd like to give you a light-hearted glimpse into the world of peak oil....

9 Things That'll Happen When We Run out of Oil

10. Embattled Senator Larry Craig (R. Idaho) begins writing what will soon become the N.Y. Times best-selling book, Taking a 'Wide Stance' on Alternative Energy.

9. Bush is overheard saying, "Hmm...maybe this solar energy thing ain't such a bad idea."

8. NASCAR races are shortened to 3 ½ laps. Drivers must hop to the finish in a ‘sack race'...Jeff Gordon still wins.

7. The U.S military pulls out of Iraq, saying, "Screw democracy."

6. Ford Launches new "Flintstones" option with detachable floorboards.

5. Decrepit oil drilling and pumping rigs around the world are purchased for 3 cents on the dollar by Disney Corp. for its new adventure ride.

4. Willie Nelson inks a deal with Exxon to promote a new line of hemp-powered "high-brid" vehicles.

3. Pasty, old, white politicians remind everyone that, "Skateboarding is not a crime -- it's an energy-efficient form of transportation...dudes."

2. Jiffy Lubes across the U.S. convert into coffee shops overnight.

1. In 2030, ...

Before you start wondering, there's a good reason why we said 9 and not 10... my top spot is incomplete. It's because I want to know what you think deserves the top spot.

All that I ask from you is this: Don't pull the punches, although judging from the countless emails I get every week from readers (I'd like to add that many of you have taught me a thing or two in the past), that won't be a problem.

In order to send me your submissions, please feel free to click the "Comment on this Article" link below.

Until next time,

While the ten items are funny, the truth is that the world will be using
many different fuels by 2030. There will be a realignment of nations, and technology will eliminate much of the
problem of Peak Oil. In fact, Peak Oil will be a paragraph in history.

That is a date when the Arab Emirates, decide that in order to maintain the price for oil they want; firm production quotas in their countries will be set; to not allow any more oil to be produced, so that the price will be stable at what they want. It's that simple!

I think life as we know it will be gone. Everyting I can think of has oil in it. And I mean everything.

The Middle East will become more violent then ever before, they will use nuclear capabilites to try and take over the other countries who came up with alternative resources that would not work in their region, they where abundant in oil, but it is a product of the past as useless as the sand they live in while the rest of the world converts to over to new resources and thrive on the economic markets.

By 2030 the Messiah will return and it will not matter anyway, he will defeat the flase one world leader who will appear to solve this problem, but will betray everyone in the end, bottom line do not worry about it, worry about following Christ, he is the only one who can fix this mess!

Safeway will return to being a neighborhood grocery, having watched box stores and chain stores nationwide sink in red ink overnight when shoppers are no longer able to drive miles to visit them, malls will turn into cheap daycare centers and the community zoning laws that were changed by greedy oilheads in the mid to late 20th century will revert to erase the nightmare of suburbia, a creation of the infernal combustion engine.

Finally, reality has overtaken us. Although the price is only a supply-and-demand consequence, the reality is that the oil-dependent western world plus Japan and eastern (China, India, et al) developing economies, must, not march, but run for their economic welfare or survival, finding alternative energy sources. I am short in saying “alternative”. There is the very much here-and-viable nuclear alternative. Whether greens and sceptics like or not, the developed and developing economies must make use of all options.

Then you have the other pressing issue, Climate Change. The world has to get its butt moving and fast. Efficiency, saving, pedalling and everything possible has to come into the picture. It goes all the way to modifying the way we perform our daily errands. To work, shopping, going for vacation rides, you name it. It is a change of culture.

As all deep transformations, neither the oil-thirst, change to alternatives, climate change correction, or change of culture, will take place in one or two years. My guess is five to ten years for the appropriate, required combination to start taking hold. Meanwhile the whole world has to learn to live with and adapt to change. In conclusion, I think it is a transition marking the divide between the end and beginning of two eras.

Hello Keith,
Never commented before, thought I'd weigh in anyhow. (I enjoy your articles, so keep up the good work). Rather than supply a couple of backhanded comments on the subject, i thought i'd throw the unsightly facts on the table. After exhausting research (disclaimer - we are in the energy business and drill oil and gas wells), there are no current available large-scale alternatives for gasoline. Energy transportation, storage, and distribution infrastructure alone makes them something in the distant future, so we are going to have to get by on the fossil fuels for the next 25 years (yes we need to keep spending on the other potential alternatives). There are only 2 fuels that can replace some of the dirty gasoline that we use. Ethanol, which is not a very good choice for many reasons, and methanol, which is an excellent choice for many reasons. If the general public were told the facts, methanol would clearly be the alternative fuel of choice. The breakdown as to how and why is too lengthy to address in this forum. However, the general public will likely start to realize the ethanol shortfalls in the next few years, and methanol will surely become the alternative blending fuel of choice - again, there are no others. And there are also no viable energy sources to replace our transportation fuel usage in the near future. Rarely can we rely on someone to give them the straight facts when it comes to energy (too many politics and people not willing to do their homework). However, not only will methanol become the primary blending fuel - replacing ethanol as time goes by, but it stands to be in a position to be the "primary fuel" that gasoline currently has a strangle-hold on. Infrastructurally speaking, there is very little change needed with methanol, which is currently derived from coal and natural gas - the most abundant resources on the planet. Technology developments that are now available can make this fuel virtually emissions free, at a cost so low it's unbelievable. Perhaps yourself and any readers will position themselves in front of the change that is going to happen. At least i feel i have done my part in providing the truth (and the direction) to which energy WILL be headed.

Best of luck.

Congress remains at an impass on the 12th day of a marathon session, struggling to craft ways to tax sunshine, wind and geothermal resources, ever since oil tax revenues completely dried up last year. Meanwhile, US and Russian soldiers are ready to do battle, ever since Russia purportedly planted their flag on the sun, declaring it their turf and demanding insolation royalties.

Once the price of fuel makes trucking too expensive, Americans will start dying because your local grocery store only has 3-4 days of food on the shelves! Those with gardens will survive. Food from the Big Valley will be sent to San Fran and LA by national guard convoys. But unless you are growing your own...not a pretty picture!
And gas here in the Sierra foothills is now $3.25 - fast approaching our all time high of $3.49 last summer. We'll see $4 within a year I think.

Do you agree with the professionals such as Richard Duncan and Walter Youngquist that peak oil and the subsequent decline in oil output per unit of world population will occasion mass starvation and a decline in world population to around 2 billion within this century? If so, when is the general investment community going to wake up and realize this?

Consider what woud happen if citizens - common ordinary citizens, voluntarily reduced their maximum speed to 55 mph. Also this time all aircraft reduced maximum airspeed 20%, trains and shipping too. This top 20% of excess uses approximately 40% of the fuel. A 40 % drop in demand would cripple OPEC and bring the American economy back into control. It would allow us to have time to develop alternatives that would increase in investment value exponentially.

Reading your free newsletter inspired me to send the following to my friends and family:

Subject: Enjoy "cheap" gas while you can!

Believe it or not, compared to the price of crude oil, gasoline is cheaper than it ought to be.

Up to a year ago, the price of gas closely tracked the price of crude. This year things got really "hinky". For most of the summer gas prices were higher than they "should" have been, and now they are much lower. As crude oil is not likely to get much cheaper, gas will have to go up quickly to catch up.

Here in Grand Rapids, MI gas ranges from $2.72/gal - $2.99/gal. I saw one station that was $2.78/gal yesterday and is $2.99/gal today. To match historical trends, gas should be about $3.32/gal.

I figured this out from this chart:

http://www.grandrapidsgasprices.com/retail_price_chart.aspx

In the "Customize Price Charts" section below the chart, in Area 1 select your city or state, and in Area 2, just to help you feel grateful, select Canada Average. Select a Time Period of 1 year. Check the box "Show Crude Oil Price" and Create Chart. You should see your local gas price tracking crude closely on the left. On the right, the crude oil line is near $3.32/gal (gasoline equivalent), the local price is lower and Canada's is higher. The price of gas used to closely track the price of crude (try a time period of 2 years) so it will probably go up soon to match again.

Higher gas prices are headed our way, so enjoy it while you can!

worthwhile reading, although the reality is the internal combustion engine is way too efficient to ever shelf, whether it be fuel made from corn, switchgrass, etc... there will be a decades long lapse before the demise of the i.c.e. engine. smart money would open eyes to conversion companies that will create new delivery systems needed to run current engines on different fuel sources, ( look at impco, nolffs, etc...) we can power our engines without arab oil, after the break, it will be cool. just my 2 cents, and my hopes as i am employed as an industrial equipment technician, good luck all.

In 2030 the United States of North America will announce that the oil extraction operation in our north-western states is reaching peak output as defined by the point at which no living creature can survive within a 1,000 mile radius without life support from our "don't worry about it" air-replacement system from Haliburton.

Borders will be closed. The US will have taken over Canada. Famine and disease will be rampant world-wide as "every man (country) for himself" mentality prevails. There will only be 2 classes in Americanada, the very rich and the very poor. Air travel will be limited to the military and politicians and finally. Bill Gates will have transferred his spiritual being into a massively distributed multiplexed autonomic neuron AI system having bought the company that created it.

Chavez will still be President of Venezuela even though total crude production is 500 b/d because the price of oil is at least $250/bbl.

NEWS FLASH: Gun sales escalate 1000%.

Story: Higher than usual gun sales, and corresponding sales of body armour have been taking place.

The explanation seems to be that ordinary citizens are concerned about making it home safely with their rationed supplies from the inner city distribution centers.

Ever since the "BIG ENERGY CRUNCH" of 2025, food, water, and other supplies have been distributed from centralized urban locations due to the lack of fuel allocations to the commercial trucking industry.

Some suburbs are between 25 and 30 miles from distribution centers and the National Guard has been unable to stop highway bandits and looting of distribution centers.

in 2030...all land transportation will be by electric vehicles. In cities, half of all streets will be designated for pedestrian traffic or restricted to bycycles or very small vehicles. Renewable energy resources will be the dominate form of energy production world wide. Local economies will grow and food will be the predominate commodity world wide.

We will still be using oil products, paying carbon taxes and investing in the new farmland territories opening up in Northern Canada. The boneheads that were thinking that mankind was the cause of (or could stop) global warming have now moved on to establishing a DNA tax based on your ancestry. Caucasians will be taxed at 95%, every one else gets a check.

Sorry it's not funny, but the fact that it takes 10 calories of cheap oil to product 1 calorie of food will continue pushing the prices up and the quantities of food down, to the point that world population begins to shrink back to it's solar-sustainable level of 1 to 2 billion, if we haven't damaged the Earth's basic system operation too much. It won't be bloodless, fair, or managable, but it will happen.

In 2030...few people will be safe in their homes as gangs comprised of the "the good, the bad and the ugly" roam the streets and countrysides raiding houses, stores, anything and anyone in search of high priced, scarce food, clothing and shelter. Heavily defended "communities" seek to protect the few who can afford it, ie those who acted years earlier on the advice of Kohl et al.
